Little is more inspirational than to talk to C-level executives of companies that follows the same purpose since the very beginning of their existence. When we sat down with Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, VP and Regional Manager South East Asia, Pacific & India, Maritime at DNV, she revealed that her company’s purpose is today even more relevant than it was back in 1864 when DNV set out to safeguard life, property and the environment.
DNV is gold sponsor of 2022 Singapore Norway Innovation Conference (SNIC), who this year is focusing on Innovation Delivered and Innovation Pipeline for the Decarbonisation and Digitalisation of the Maritime Industry. We asked Cristina what DNV was doing in relation to these pressing topics.
Innovation Delivered – Timely and accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reporting, management and insights from BHP’s chartered vessels.
“It’s crucial that we measure, to know where we are at, before we can see what works in reducing our emissions”, says Cristina as she is presenting DNV’s recently delivered project for BHP. The project started in April 2022, and is already delivered. DNV’s solution is aimed at vessel charterers and commodity producers and is implemented by BHP for all of its maritime freight operations. Combining this with DNV’s extensive maritime domain and regulatory competency, BHP is now well-positioned to receive the support it needs, from gaining a trusted overview of the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions footprint of its maritime freight operations to receiving technical guidance on aspects of its Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction strategy. Innovation Pipeline – Ammonia Bunkering Safety Study
“We need to find alternative energy sources, but we need to make sure these sources are safe before we put them on the global market”. Always true to the original purpose of DNV, Cristina stresses how safety should always come first. Ammonia is one of the most promising fuels to decarbonise shipping. However, DNV research shows that a number of safety gaps hold the potential to disrupt the speed and success of the transition. In January 2022, DNV was selected to lead an ammonia bunkering safety study by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) in Singapore. The study aims to define a robust set of safety guidelines and operational envelopes that will establish the basis of a regulatory sandbox for ammonia bunkering trials at two local sites. Today, an industry panel of 80 companies are registered to participate in the study. Results will be published in the first quarter of 2023.
Cristina discussed the fact that we spent 20 years transitioning to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), but we no longer have 20 years to transition to ammonia. She hopes the study will show how to transition to ammonia safely AND quickly.
Enabling global co-operation
“Green House Gas emissions are not coming from the maritime industry alone and the maritime industry can’t be the only ones who changes their ways”, highlights Cristina as she stresses the need for co-operation, also between industries. To tackle decarbonisations’ ultimate challenge of carbon-neutral fuel availability, supply chains must be built through cross-industry alliances. DNV finds itself in a unique position as an independent third party player, facilitating global co-operation and transformations.
