As part of NBAS’ commitment to highlighting outstanding Norwegian and Singaporean creatives, we are proud to feature Vibeke Slyngstad, one of Norway’s most prominent female figurative artists.
Currently, her work is being showcased in the group exhibition Metamorphosis: Echoes of Perception, held at Tang Contemporary Art in Singapore from 1–29 November 2025.
The Artist and Her Vision
Vibeke Slyngstad creates figurative paintings that focus on the vulnerable landscape, either in the form of politically problematic areas or in endangered nature.
Her method is both meticulous and deeply personal. From afar, her artwork appears almost photorealistic. However, a closer look reveals each brushstroke and every delicate layer of translucent paint. This interplay between control and organic texture is intentional.
“It is very important to me that the works have a humanity and honesty about them. The viewer is able to see every mark,” says Slyngstad.
Through this visible artistry, she invites a more honest and emotional engagement with her work.
Global Recognition
Vibeke Slyngstad has presented her art at prestigious venues across the globe. These include the British Museum in London and the Henie Onstad Art Center in Høvikodden in 2025. Previously, she exhibited at Made in Cloister in Naples (2022), Bocconi University in Milan (2018), and Fondazione Stelline in Milan (2017). Her work was also shown at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo (2013). In 2009 she participated in the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale at the Nordic Pavilion, curated by Elmgreen & Dragset.
Her solo shows span multiple years and locations. She exhibited at OSL contemporary in 2019 and 2024. Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery hosted her work in London (2021, 2023) and Berlin (2020). Other notable exhibitions include Kristiansand Kunsthall (2018) and Haugar Kunstmuseum (2017).
Slyngstad’s pieces are included in several esteemed collections. These include the British Museum, the National Museum of Art in Norway, Kistefos Museum, and Sørlandets Kunstmuseum. Additionally, her work is part of the Art Council Norway, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Norwegian Parliament Art Collection.
