NBAS Artist Spotlight: Martine Poppe
NBAS is delighted to feature Norwegian artist Martine Poppe, who divides her time between London and Oslo. Poppe’s art seamlessly blends abstraction and representation, inviting viewers into her captivating creative process.

A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art (BA, MFA), Poppe has exhibited her work internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Recently, in January 2025, she showed with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery at Art SG in Singapore.
Artistic Process & Themes
Poppe’s work explores the delicate balance between abstraction and representation through a diverse use of materials. Climate themes are central to her process, often starting with photographs or textiles. By digitally distorting nature images to the point of near-unrecognizability, she prints them on a large scale and mounts them behind translucent fabrics, creating layered screens for painting.
The resulting artworks capture the interplay of diffracted light, overexposure, and pixelation, while recycled materials from her process transform into sculptural elements within the exhibition space, adding depth and complexity to her visual storytelling.
Upcoming Exhibitions
Poppe will participate in a group exhibition at EXPO Chicago, held at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall, Chicago, USA, from 24–27 April 2025. Three of her new works—Running Tree, On the Back of the North Wind, and Cloud Break—will be featured in the presentation.
Her upcoming solo exhibition, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, will be held at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, Tower Bridge, London, from 6 June to 5 July 2025, with an opening on 5 June.
Highlights and Achievements
Poppe’s art is featured in prestigious collections such as the UK Government Art Collection (UK), KODE Museums (Norway), the Saatchi Collection (UK), and many others across Europe, Asia, and the US. She has participated in notable residencies including Vice x Velux (2022), Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, 2019) and The Banff Centre (Canada, 2018). Poppe has received several esteemed grants and awards, including the Ingrid Lindbäck Langaards Stiftelse Grant (2021 & 2022) and the Young Artists Grant from the Norwegian Arts Council (2017). She was shortlisted for the East London Painting Prize (2015) and awarded the Juvenarte Prize (Norway, 2010 & 2011).
