Telenor’s Asian Journey started nearly twenty years ago when company representatives travelled across Asia with open eyes and a culture of curiosity, exploring opportunities where they could bring their unique experiences and resources from Scandinavia. Building business began slowly. Even after launching in Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand, Telenor’s Asian mobile subscriber base remained small, the regulatory environment challenging and there was little to be had in terms of revenues.

Now Telenor’s Asia businesses account for nearly half of global revenues. The global customer base is approaching 200 million, and they are on track to get 200 million people on the internet by 2017 – most of them in Asia. Partly because of the services and investments that mobile operators like Telenor bring in, GDPs are rising, new technology sectors are flourishing and household incomes are climbing.

Former Head of Asia, now CEO of Telenor Group, Sigve Brekke said that back in 1997, few people believed that mobile would be a mass-market in Bangladesh. In 2014, Telenor surpassed 50 million customers in Bangladesh, now the biggest customer base in the whole Telenor Group.

Tor Odland is head of corporate communications in Asia for Telenor Group, the largest mobile operator in the region. He is responsible for building the Telenor brand across markets as diverse as India, Myanmar, Thailand, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia. In his role he also advises the national executive management teams on best practice communications strategy and issues management.

Tor Odland first joined Telenor Group as the Vice President of Group Communications in August 2011, where he had a global responsibility for internal and external communications. Prior to Telenor, Tor was a Vice President of Corporate Communications at Opera Software from 2004. He received his Master of Science degree as The London School of Economics and Political Science and his Bachelor’s Degree from The University of South Carolina.
